What is Swimming in open water?

This course is an ideal way to apply your swimming technique in open water, push your limits, and enjoy the freedom of open water.

Courses

Swimming safety is essential for participation in this open water course. Therefore, a (Dutch) swimming diploma A is mandatory, and you must be able to swim 100 meters freestyle continuously without stopping. If it becomes apparent during the course that your level is insufficient to participate safely, the instructor may decide to terminate your participation.
Wearing a wetsuit is mandatory when water temperatures are below 15 degrees. You can rent a wetsuit at the meeting point, Teuntje de Slak, for €5 to €7,50 per rental. There is also a place there where you can quickly change.
Additionally, wearing a brightly colored swimming cap is mandatory for the swimmer's visibility and to retain heat. If you do not have one yourself, you can from May 6, 2026 Purchase an ACLO swimming cap at the Sports Centre reception desk for €4,20.
No experience with open water swimming is necessary; you will learn all the required skills during the course. We focus on safety, orientation, breathing, handling waves, and assessing conditions, so that you enter the open water with confidence.
This course is an ideal way to apply your swimming technique in open water, push your limits, and enjoy the freedom of open water.
