ACLO City can now be found at Bloemstraat 36!
The University of Groningen (RUG), Hanze University of Applied Sciences, and the ACLO Foundation have reached a significant milestone in the realization of the new, sustainable, and multifunctional sports center on the Zernike Campus. The contract has been awarded to the construction company Hegeman and BAM Integrale Projecten Noord. Construction will begin in the spring of 2026 on the north side of the current sports complex. Students will be able to use their new sports facilities in 2028.
Modern sports facilities
The construction work for the new ACLO Sports Centre has been awarded to the construction company Hegeman. The installation work will be carried out by BAM Integrale Projecten Noord. The new sports centre, with a gross floor area of approximately 12.500 m², offers a wide range of modern sports facilities. The design by AGS Architects focuses on sustainability, inclusivity, and an optimal user experience, with attention to acoustics, air circulation, and indoor climate.
Future vision
The new sports center will not only be a modern and sustainable sports facility, but also a meeting place for students and staff. "At ACLO, we are proud that with this new sports center, we are creating a place where everyone feels at home and where sports, relaxation, and connection are central," says Roan Luning, president of the ACLO. "With the arrival of the new sports center, we can effectively serve more than 20.000 athletes and 49 student sports clubs. This is a huge step forward for the sports culture on campus."
Start of construction work and planning
The design plans have been finalized, and preparatory work to prepare the site for construction has begun on the north side of the current sports center. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2026 and will last approximately two years.
